I don’t know if you have ever found yourself overwhelmed by the state of the world, but I certainly have. I have often felt like I can’t keep my house on track, let alone handle saving the planet like I want. I used to feel like if I couldn’t do it perfectly, maybe I shouldn’t even bother.
I wanted to make an impact, but I didn’t know where to begin. I felt overwhelmed by what seemed like the high financial costs and emotional energy I thought it would take to make the changes we needed to achieve balance in our home. Between trying to manage my four kids and our lives, “sustainability” just didn’t seem sustainable.
Why did I feel this way? Well, as researcher by nature, I often bite off more that I can chew. One time I thought “We need to start composting!” So, I built a composting bin, got the containers for inside, got a tub for our garage so that I could start worm composting, and even started plotting out a garden. By the time I had all the tools and knowledge I was exhausted! And all I had to show for it was half-tilled garden and a bunch of dead worms.
I have learned a lot since those years of failed projects. Sometimes the “sustainable” part in sustainability means doing the “less-than-perfect” thing. Progress, not perfection. It is not about the big changes, but about the small steps we can take right now. I still think it is important to reduce our garbage and food waste, but now instead of worms, we have a compost service that takes our kitchen/yard scraps weekly. Easy-peasy!
One small choice that made a lasting impact on every member of our family was when we moved to using essential oils and all natural household products in 2015. This one small decision has had a huge impact on not only our household but on our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. I have found a purpose and a passion through these little bottles of plant goodness.
Over the years we have made lots of changes in our household to reduce our environmental impact. I have come to know that eco-friendly and sustainable living does not have to cost a lot or take up a big portion of our already busy schedules. I have found many amazing products, diy recipes & projects, and time-saving tips & tricks that I can’t wait to share with you!
